Soledad Becerril, Ombudsman of Spain, met today with her Turkish counterpart, Nihat Ömeroglu, at the "Casa del Defensor del Pueblo", the headquarters of the Ombudsman of Spain in Madrid, within the framework of a twinning project between the two countries managed by the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP) to strengthen this recently-created (March, 2013) role in the Euro-Asian country.
This meeting, in turn, is part of the first study visit of Turkey to Spain in the project. Between now and next Friday, the Turkish delegation will attend different meetings with experts on the subject in Madrid, where they will also visit the Congress and the Constitutional Court. They will also travel to Seville. There they will meet the Andalusian Ombudsman.
The purpose of the project, in which France is also collaborating as a second partner with its Défenseur des Droits, is to strengthen this institution in Turkey and reinforce its role as a reference institution in the administrative context of the country, following the standards of the EU and the Paris principles. Together the Spanish Ombudsman and the French agency have a total of 30 years of experience, which they will share with the Turkish government in support of its function of defence of liberties and human rights, and monitoring transparency, justice and good government.
The project, classified as a ‘Twinning Project’ and which was kicked off last March, will be underway until 2016 and has a budget of 1,579,000 euros from the European Commission.
