EUROCLIMA+ held a meeting to present a web viewer with climate change scenarios to several institutions for training purposes
With the dual objective of presenting a climate change scenario web viewer and training technical staff from the Nicaraguan Institute for Territorial Studies (INETER) and the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (MARENA), EUROCLIMA+ arranged a meeting of specialists from these institutions with powers regarding climate change.
One of the actions of EUROCLIMA+, a project funded by the EU, is to assist Latin America to strengthen its meteorological services and the generation of climate scenarios to plan adaptation measures. This action, coordinated by FIIAPP, will allow different countries to forecast the impact of climate change and plan adaptation measures.
The workshop was an opportunity to present the results of the action in Central America, particularly in Nicaragua, and to train technical staff from MARENA and INETER to manage the generation of these regional climate change scenarios. The purpose of this training is to be able to use such scenarios to predict specific impacts and vulnerabilities, in addition to assessing the need to adapt to climate change in a range of social and economic sectors and ecological systems.
The meeting was introduced by MARENA vice minister Javier Gutiérrez, who underlined the importance of having studies and climate information to guide decision-making. The meeting was also attended by experts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and the Centre for Public Works Studies and Experimentation (CEDEX).
The meeting also identified the needs of the second phase of the project, such as ensuring and consolidating operation of the viewer and the use of the information it provides to plan adaptation measures. The meeting also proposed the establishment of a national working group to generate scenarios, the use of the viewer in decision-making and the bolstering of training.
