The “Institutional Strengthening for judges and prosecutors in matters of international cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking among institutions in Latin America, Africa and Europe” event took place in São Paulo, Brazil, from 9 to 11 December 2013.
The meeting was organised by FIIAPP as part of its AMERIPOL-EU project. Participants included judges from Argentina, Spain, Panama and Peru and public prosecutors from Cape Verde and Brazil.
The participants spent three days visiting different Brazilian justice institutions and sharing experiences from their countries of origin. They were also able to take part in round table discussions with their host institutions.
The visitors attended two trials and toured the Forum Criminal de Barra Funda (Criminal Courts). They also visited the Instituto de Criminalística de la Policía Científica (Criminal Institute of the Scientific Police), where they were able to tour the facilities and laboratories where the scientific police analyse the different types of drugs seized and the Federal Police of Guarulhos International Airport where they were able to witness the different situations faced every day in terms of incoming and outgoing drugs, at an airport considered internationally to be a world leader in terms of drug seizures.
All the participants said that they would be interested in continuing to share experiences and in working together. As one of the participants said, “to fight organised crime we need to be organised”.
